The source of fire has changed through the ages; sometimes it was linseed oil, sometimes kerosene. However, the need and interest in luminaires was not lacking. It is not known which luminaires were used to illuminate the darkness in the historical scene, but the first known luminaire was oil lamps, and the lamps were followed by administrations, sailor lanterns, carbides, gas lamps and luxuries. Luminaires were sometimes an indicator of social status, sometimes a helper for those in need, and sometimes a source of inspiration for poets.
Many old values have disappeared today. Lighting fixtures that adorned the corners of homes throughout history have been replaced by lighting devices that have no aesthetic value today. However, time did not reduce the need and interest in luminaires.
